Kanye Omari West known as KANYE WEST is one of the most celebrated artists of the past decade, selling more than 32 million albums and 100 million digital downloads worldwide. He’s also won a total of 21 Grammy awards and been named by Forbes Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Kanye West has made headlines for so many different reasons in the past few years. From his marriage to Kim Kardashian to his two adorable kids, North and Saint, Taylor swift diss, and to his Yeezys deal with first Nike then Adidas, the rapper is never out of the news for too long.
His Yeezy deal with Nike for example came with the Red October shoes selling out in a flash, despite later having issues with Nike that resulted to both parties going separate ways with Kanye saying in his FACTS(Charlie heat version) from the TLOP(The life of Pablo) album that Nike were treating him like a slave without given him full control of his ideas for his Yeezys, and were busy giving him peanuts deals and giving the likes of Lebron James life time deals worth billions of dollars so he won’t run away from them.
Then came the Adidas Yeezy deal, with the Yeezy750 which turnout quite different from the idea back then with Nike, talking about in design and style was something else.
Kanye is a man who can seemingly do no wrong – even the people who openly call him overhyped have probably secretly thought about copping a pair of Yeezy Boosts, or wear out their headphones with ‘Jesus Walks’ on the down-low. This is saying everything the dude touches turns to gold.
The story behind all this success started with his near death experience way back 2002, when Kanye was still just an up-and-coming artist, he made headlines for a truly terrifying reason: a near-fatal car accident.
Just two weeks after signing a deal with Roc-a-Fella Records, Kanye drove home after working late at a California recording studio on Oct. 23, 2002. He fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his car into an oncoming vehicle. The driver of the other car broke both of his legs, while Kanye shattered his jaw which lead to his mouth wired shut.
Two weeks after the accident, he wrote his hit single “Through the Wire,” and recorded it with his mouth still wired shut, the rest they said is history. This led to most fans wondering if actually his lack of smile was caused by the accident, his epic response was quoted
“Back when I was working on Yeezus,” he tells a reporter at High Snobiety, “I saw this book from the 1800s and it was velvet-covered with brass and everything. I looked at all these people’s photos, and they look so real, and their outfits were incredible, and they weren’t smiling. People, you know, the paparazzi, always come up to me: ‘Why you not smiling?’ And I think, not smiling makes me smile. When you see paintings in an old castle, people are not smiling because it just wouldn’t look as cool.”
although he was busted in couple of shots smiling to the public but never to a paparazzi
he was also caught smiling in a NBA game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Chicago Bulls then switched back instantly.
Kanye spoke about just how crucial this recovery period was for his career, telling Interview magazine in 2014, “The accident gave me the opportunity to do what I really wanted to do. During that recovery period, I just spent all my time honing my craft and making The College Dropout.”
